Making Inferences is such a hard reading strategy for first graders. Even when I taught 7th grade Reading, my seventh graders struggled with it. So I tried to make a connection with something they were a little more familiar with and I came up with the part-part-whole model we use in math. My kiddos have a really good grasp of how to use the part-part-whole model in math so why not use the same model for making inferneces. So, I came up with this little comparison. Students need to use their schema {part} plus what they read {part} to make the inference {whole}. Pick up this little poster by clicking on the picture.
